Wise Investing: Don’t Let Money Rob You Of Your Greatest Inheritance!
I’ve spent most of my life working over 40 hours a week in order to “get ahead.” In undergraduate school I worked three jobs and also worked my way through law school. When I opened a law office, I worked nights and weekends to launch my practice. I wanted the finer things in life. I wanted to travel the world, to live in a fine home, and to sustain a lifestyle that would make my family happy. But—almost as soon as I attained each thing I wanted—I discovered—it was never enough.
In fact, even most billionaires (I’ve never been one) EVER have enough.
In a Forbes Magazine article “Why Do The Mega Rich Continue to Work,” Larissa Faw, wrote: “Despite the fact they have more than enough money to spend the rest of their lives on their yachts, many mega-rich professionals devote more than 40 hours a week in jobs that are oftentimes banal and stressful.” www.Forbes.com.
So, doesn’t it seem foolish to spend the majority of your life consumed with investing in something you will NEVER have the time to enjoy? You can’t take it with you. You don’t even know how many days you have left on this earth, so don’t you want to make it count? Just the other day, a friend of mine fell off a bus, hit her head, and died. It’s shockingly sad…and yet, we live like it won’t ever happen to us. Doesn’t it make much better sense to invest in something that we can actually enjoy?
Working just for the sake of collecting more earthly treasures is engaging in high stakes gambling with our life!
WHO do you trust to give you sound investment advice?
Does anyone you know have more wisdom than God?
Would you like to know what the CREATOR of all things has to say about it?
According to God’s Word, money will NEVER satisfy you:
“He who loves money will NOT be satisfied with money, nor he who loves wealth with his income; this also is vanity.” Ecclesiastes 5:10 https://bible.com/bible/59/ecc.5.10.ESV
Thus, it stands to reason that to spend the majority of our waking hours focused on making money, is a VERY dissatisfying business. Doesn’t it seem very, very foolish to work hard all of your life just—to NEVER be happy? It’s like drinking salt water when you’re thirsty. You will ALWAYS be thirsty! You may say, “But Kimberly, I have to work to take care of myself and my family.” True. You do. In fact, God created work to help us attain satisfaction. But it’s not by getting more material things. We need to learn how to work in a way that satisfies our soul. We’re thirsty for accomplishment, but we need to drink fresh water and not salt water.
Interesting hint: it has to do with Jesus, who said He is the LIVING water.
Let’s explore what GOD says about work.
From the beginning of time, God created us to work:
“The Lord God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to WORK it and keep it.” Genesis 2:15 https://bible.com/bible/59/gen.2.15.ESV
Jesus and the Heavenly Father are ALWAYS working.
“But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” John 5:17 https://bible.com/bible/59/jhn.5.17.ESV
I believe this means that even in the New Heavens and the New earth, we will be working because—we were created in the image of God. [In that day, they won’t need lawyers, so I plan to be an architect.] ??So, if God works…what is He working for? Well, we know what He’s NOT doing; that is, He’s not working for more worldly treasures. In fact, God warns us of the dangers of this path:
“What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36 https://bible.com/bible/114/mrk.8.36.NKJV
“The love of money is the root of all evil.” 1 Timothy 6:10
Jesus gave us simple instructions about how to prioritize our life when it comes to money. Our motivation must be out of our love for Him. If we aren’t working for God’s glory; we are simply a slave.
“No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money.”Matthew 6:24 https://bible.com/bible/59/mat.6.24.ESV
Paul explained that in Christ, our work enables us to possess the double blessing of both making a living, and to living for God’s glory!
“Servants, obey in everything those who are your earthly masters, not only when their eyes are on you as pleasers of men, but in simplicity of purpose [with all your heart] because of your reverence for the Lord and as a sincere expression of your devotion to Him. Whatever may be your task, work at it heartily (from the soul), as [something done] for the Lord and not for men, Knowing [with all certainty] that it is from the Lord [and not from men] that you will receive the inheritance which is your [real] reward. [The One Whom] you are actually serving [is] the Lord Christ (the Messiah).”
Colossians 3:22-24 https://bible.com/bible/8/col.3.22-24.AMPC
Jesus gave us the great secret of Heaven to keep us from being deceived by the enemy to focus on the obtaining the wrong treasures:
“Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Matthew 6:19-21 https://bible.com/bible/114/mat.6.19-21.NKJV
When we work for the glory of God, we lay a foundation for an eternal inheritance—to be enjoyed with those we love—far beyond this lifetime.
